The Ironhead dies
A sad day today as one of the old breed of huge running backs passed away. Craig “Ironhead” Heyward died today as a result of a brain tumor. Ironhead, besides having a glorious nickname, was a beast of a runner back in the 80s and 90s. His best season came in 1995 with the Atlanta Falcons, where he gained his only Pro Bowl selection.
Ironhead played with five teams over his NFL career. After spending his 1st 5 season with the Saints, he moved onto to play in Chicago, Atlanta, St.Louis and Indianapolis. Heyward was a surprisingly good receiver for such a big man and had 177 receptions in his career. He finished with over 4300 yards and 30 touchdowns for his career.
Heyward suffered from the aggresive tumor for seven years and had a stroke a few years ago that left him partially paralyzed. He was 39 years old. All of us at The Healthy Scratch wish the best for the Ironhead family.
