A record 54th and counting clay court victory was set yesterday by Spain’s Rafael Nadal to open his title defense of the the French Open.  The spunky Spainiard made quick work of Sweden’s Robin Soderling 6-2, 7-5, 6-1 to take the record that was previously held by Guillermo Vilas from May-Oct 1977.  Ironically, Vilas was unaware that he held such a record, wasn’t disappointed at all with losing the record.  With the victory, Nadal improves his record at Roland Garros to 8-0.
